In a gallery conversation at The Print Center,  Dr. Karlawish joined curator Lauren Rosenblum to explore the exhibit “Memory, Loss.” Using media such as photography, print and video, six artists examine the life of a relative living with dementia. At each work, Jason reflects on what he discovered about the challenges of both mind perception and mind support. “Memory, Loss” features works by Janet Biggs, Will Harris, Eloise Hess, Katherine Hubbard, Kaitlin Santoro, Edra Soto, and Hester Stinnett.

Dr. Karlawish explores the differences between the brain and the mind in persons living with dementia. Brian is an organ we can see and measure. He explains how mind emerges from an interaction between brain and the body and environment around the brain. Using compelling stories from his practice, he argues how this should guide the care of a person with a brain damaged by diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy Body disease or LATE. Care begins with manipulating body and environment to restore mind.

Dr. Karlawish speaks with artist Neesa Becker-Procaccino, who returned to painting after an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. In this personal conversation, Neesa shares how watercolor became a way to express herself, stay connected, and remain present.
